2025年4月に国際学部に着任しました、福本広光 (ふくもとひろみつ) と申します。

専門は英語学、特に英語表現の歴史的変化や文体上の特徴を研究対象にしています。現在はアメリカ英語における「分離不定詞 (split infinitive; to不定詞に副詞など他の要素が入り込んでいる構文)」と呼ばれる語法を中心に取り組んでいます。具体的には通時的な頻度調査、ニュース記事、政治演説、文学作品といった異なるジャンルにおける出現傾向、さらには語用論的な特徴や修辞的な効果に焦点を当て、コーパスと呼ばれる大規模な言語資料を用いて実証的な分析を進めています。また、分離不定詞を含め伝統的に文法上の「逸脱」とされてきた構文には、規範と実際の使用の間に乖離が見られることがあります。その背景を探るためには話し手や書き手が自らの言語選択を通じてどのような立場をとり、読者や聴衆との関係性をどのように築こうとしているかといった、言語の認知的側面にもアプローチする必要があるでしょう。私はこれらの観点から、過去の文献と現代の使用例とを比較しつつ、言語使用の通時的変化とその多様性を捉え、いわゆる逸脱表現に内在する機能的意義の一端を明らかにしたいと考えています。

このたび、ありがたいご縁があり関西学院大学で勤務する機会を得ました。これまでも学会など様々な機会でお邪魔させていただくたびにキャンパスの美しさや学生の人柄の良さを実感しておりました一方で、当時はまさか自身がこの大学のメンバーになるとは思ってもみませんでした。さらに「英語の関学」の伝統についてももちろん存じており、それを象徴する学部の一つである国際学部で教育に携わらせていただけることは私にとって非常に光栄なことであるとともに、身が引き締まる思いです。着任以降、数多くの先生方や職員の皆様、関係者の方々にはお世話になりっぱなしですが、ほんの僅かでも本学の研究や教育に貢献することができるよう、日々精進いたします。

Hello everyone!

My name is Hiromitsu Fukumoto, and I became a faculty member of the School of International Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University in April 2025.

My field of expertise is English linguistics, with a particular focus on historical changes in English expressions and stylistic features. Currently, my research centers on a construction known as the split infinitive (a grammatical structure in which an adverb or other element intervenes between “to” and the base verb, as in to boldly go). More specifically, I am conducting empirical analysis using large-scale language corpora, investigating the diachronic frequency of split infinitives, their distribution across different genres such as news articles, political speeches, and literary texts, and their pragmatic characteristics and rhetorical functions. Also, constructions that have traditionally been regarded as grammatical “deviations”, like split infinitives, often reveal a clear gap between prescriptive norms and actual language use. Underlying this gap are cognitive aspects of language, such as how speakers or writers position themselves through their linguistic choices and how they attempt to construct relationships with their readers or audience. From this perspective, my research aims to elucidate the functional significance embedded in so-called deviant expressions by comparing historical texts with contemporary usage, thereby capturing the diachronic change and diversity of language use.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to work at Kwansei Gakuin University. The beautiful campus and excellent students make it a truly inspiring environment. I am also aware of the university’s long-standing tradition of excellence in English language education. It is a great honor, and I feel a deep sense of mission and responsibility to be a part of the School of International Studies, which embodies that tradition. Since my arrival, I have been receiving continuous support from faculty, staff, and colleagues. I do my utmost every day to contribute as much as I can to the research and educational activities of the university.
