Associate Professor Mari Yamamoto of the Japanese Language Education Center gave a presentation entitled “Quoting others: Mitigating accountability for the request in Japanese conversation” at the International Conference on Conversation Analysis (ICCA) 2026, which was held from June 23 to June 29, 2026, in Edmonton, Canada.

The International Conference on Conversation Analysis (ICCA) is one of the leading international conferences in the field of Conversation Analysis, bringing together researchers from around the world to present and discuss the latest findings on language and social interaction. Each conference attracts approximately 300–500 researchers from more than 50 countries.

ICCA 2026 was held under the theme “Diversities, Language, Interaction,” providing participants with an opportunity to engage with the latest international research in the field. The conference featured a wide range of studies addressing interactional phenomena across different languages and cultures. Through attending presentations and discussions, participants were able to exchange ideas and gain new perspectives on language and interaction.

There were lively discussions throughout the conference, and researchers from many countries exchanged knowledge and insights. Numerous presentations highlighted interactional phenomena that transcend individual languages, offering valuable inspiration and new directions for future research.
