Professor Katsura Koishi, School of Humanities, Kwansei Gakuin University, gave a presentation on “Generating Work Value in Classical Music: the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s Concert Programs and Beethoven” at the 8th Biennial Conference of the International Musicological Society Regional Association for East Asia (IMSEA), which was held from September 19 to September 21, 2025, in Nanning, China.

The IMSEA is the East Asian regional conference of the International Musicological Society (IMS), held every two years; this year marked its eighth edition. Hosted at Guangxi Arts University in Nanning—the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region—the institution is widely recognized as a leading center for research on ethnic minorities and traditional musical cultures in China, and it serves as a hub for the study of diverse musical traditions worldwide. The conference was convened to explore the complex interrelationships of musical traditions, heritage, and communities.

More than 120 researchers from over ten countries gathered to give presentations and hold discussions. Across four parallel sessions, participants presented the latest research findings, exchanged ideas, and engaged in lively debates. The event also included concerts of ethnic music performed by students of Guangxi Arts University, providing participants with a rare opportunity to experience local cultural traditions and broaden their perspectives on world music.
