Presentation at ICEDU 2026

On March 26, 2026, Andrew Blaker (Instructor of English as a Foreign Language [IEFL], School of Architecture) delivered a presentation entitled “Level Appropriate Material Generation in EFL” at the International Conference on Education (ICEDU) 2026 held in Bali, Indonesia. The presentation outlined an ongoing research project focused on fine-tuning open-source large language models (LLMs) using datasets of CEFR-aligned sentences. The aim of this project is to enable locally operated models to generate level-appropriate English learning materials tailored to students’ proficiency levels. Particular emphasis was placed on the pedagogical benefits of controllable output and the potential for scalable, accessible material development in EFL contexts. The presentation was well received by conference participants, and it led to constructive discussions with fellow researchers and educators. Valuable feedback was obtained regarding dataset design, evaluation methods, and practical classroom applications. These exchanges provided important insights that will contribute to the future development of the project. Overall, participation in ICEDU 2026 was highly meaningful, offering opportunities to share research findings, receive expert feedback, and explore future research directions.
