Research on Informal Institutions and Global Trade by Professor Eiji Fujii is Published in World Development
On May 17, 2026, the results of research by Professor Eiji Fujii, School of Economics on informal institutions and global trade were published in World Development, a flagship journal for international development and development studies. This research by Professor Fujii sheds light on the effects that informal inter-governmental organizations such as BRICS, MIKTA, G20 and G7 can exert on world trade flow, despite lacking legal mandates. The results show that participation in BRICS, in particular, generates trade gains comparable to those associated with formal regional trade agreements or WTO accession. The findings reveal a novel channel of international economic integration that operates beyond legal commitments.
