【テーマ】Negging the Defiers to Relax Monotonicity: The Difference-in-Instrumental-Variables Estimand

【Abstract】The psychology literature provides evidence that reactionary subjects---defiers---would violate the standard monotonicity assumption in instrumental variables. Instead of assuming the absence of defiers, I propose a new estimand that embraces and explicitly accounts for their existence to correctly identify treatment effects. This method has several desirable properties: it imposes only minor additional assumptions while eliminating the need for monotonicity; it is harmless in the sense that, when no defiers are present, it leaves standard IV estimands unchanged; and, after basic linear transformations, it can be implemented using off-the-shelf tools such as 2SLS. Using replication data, I illustrate the applicability of the proposed estimand through several examples.
