Philosophy on Education and Study at School of International Studies

In order to make the underlying goal of its education and research program a reality, the goal of the School of International Studies is to educate students who will be fully equipped to understand and analyze issues in the field of international affairs. Through their studies, students will become "world citizens" with "global minds," able to contribute to society and their fellow men on both the local and global level.
In order to achieve this goal, students will be required to study foreign languages to an advanced level, and to familiarize themselves with the academic research methods appropriate to area studies. Depending on their field of interest, students will enter either the North American Studies Course or the Asian Studies Course. Both these courses are comprised of three different study fields: Culture and Language, Society and Governance, and Economics and Management. The School of International Studies will offer a full range of specialized courses in English.
These will develop the students' character and abilities in, for example, the following areas.
  1. The ability to find and solve problems
This ability will be cultivated in small group seminar classes in the fields of Culture and Language, Society and Governance, and Economics and Management.
  2. The ability to understand different cultures
Also in the fields of Culture and Language, Society and Governance, and Economics and Management, students will familiarize themselves with the characteristics of different cultures.
  3. High ethical standards
Through a liberal education based on the values of Christianity and humanity, students' ethical values will be placed on a firm basis.
  4. Linguistic communication ability
Students will acquire advanced language communication skills through a foreign language education program throughout the four years of their course. In their sophomore year all students will be required to participate in a study abroad program for a minimum of one month to a maximum of one year.

Students' Future Careers

Equipped with the ability to "understand and analyze issues in international affairs", mentioned above as the goal of the new School, the School' s graduates will be qualified for a wide range of careers, both within Japan and on the international stage. Students are expected to work for multi-national companies, international organizations, central and local government offices, educational institutions, NGOs and NPOs. Some students will go on to continue their studies at graduate school.
