In recent years, the environment surrounding education has been in chaos and there are a host of problems involving children such as bullying, class disruption, children who refuse to go to school and declining academic standards. Meanwhile, demands in society toward education have been increasing, causing problems that cannot be handled only by teachers working in the field. The educational capability of society as a whole has to be regenerated, while taking all educational activities of society, including those conducted by schools, households and local communities, into consideration. Kwansei Gakuin set up the School of Education in April 2009, aiming to foster trusted and high-quality educators (teachers of elementary schools and kindergartens) and childcarers, as well as supporters of various educational activities.

Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education

Considering early childhood as an important period of time when children build the basis for character formation and move toward childhood, we foster high-quality kindergarten teachers and childcarers who have the skills and humanity to watch over the growth of children from a child' s perspective.

The six years during childhood in the elementary school period are an important period of time when children build the basis of "intelligence, emotion and will." Different attitudes and instruction methods should be adopted for the different stages of elementary school; the lower grades as a continuation of early childhood and the higher grades as a period of youth moving toward puberty. We help students systematically acquire the knowledge necessary for elementary education and foster elementary school teachers who are rich in humanity and who can significantly develop the potential of children.

Department of Applied Education

Schools and households currently face many challenges, including class disruption, children who refuse to go to school, bullying, a weakened willingness to learn and undeveloped sense of morality, as well as a lack of leadership among parents and teachers. Applied education is a field of study that approaches problems in education from various fields, including psychology and sociology, examining the ideal form and specific means of support toward parents and teachers from a comprehensive perspective. This department pursues the ideal form of support toward children, guardians and teachers based on the knowledge and methodology of pedagogy, as well as on the knowledge and technology of educational counseling and welfare.
