This is an independent graduate school based in the Language Center. In the first term, students improve their language communication capabilities, a key to research, and carry out specialized research into language. There are seven programs: linguistic science, which analyzes language and its use; cultural linguistics (American&British studies / French studies / German studies / East Asian Studies), which studies the deep relationship between language and culture; and linguistic
education, which researches the theories and practices of language learning; Japanese-language education program, which researches the theories and practices of Japanese language learning. All courses operate on a semester system and are offered both in the daytime and, for the benefit of people working in the daytime, in the evening except for the Japanese education program and cultural linguistic programs (only for French, German and East Asian Studies).
